The Team New Zealand boat CAMPER is looking at an opportunity to finally close the gap on their three rivals as the fleet heads into the windless Doldrums zone in the Atlantic on the first leg of the Volvo Ocean race.
Roughly five degrees of Latitude either side of the Equator, the heating effect of the sun, combined with the convergence of the northern and southern hemisphere trade winds, creates an area of predominantly light winds, punctuated by intense thunderstorms and sudden wind squalls.
Camper is now in third place, 137 miles behind the leader Puma, while previous leader Groupama is now 4th.
The first leg is from Spain to South Africa.
