Troy Cooley has been appointed interim head coach for Australia's upcoming cricket tour of South Africa, following Tim Nielsen's resignation last week.

Cooley, currently the head coach at Cricket Australia's Centre of Excellence, says he'll only perform a caretaker role and will not be applying for the full-time head coaching job.

The 45-year-old was Australia's bowling coach from 2006 until this year's World Cup as well as being the team's assistant coach in the last two years.

In 2009, Cooley coached Australia for the last three one-day internationals of their 6-1 series victory over England in England, and was also head coach of the Australia A tour of Zimbabwe this July.

Cooley took 54 wickets in 33 first-class appearances for Tasmania between 1985 and 1996 before starting his coaching career.
