A number of medals are up for grabs for New Zealand athletes when the World Championships start in South Korea on Saturday.

New Zealand has a team of eight competing in Daegu, headed by shot put champion Valerie Adams and middle distamce runner Nick Willis.

This event is a stepping stone for next year's Olympics and high performance director Scott Goodman is looking for something close to personal bests for all of their athletes.

Goodman has only been in the role for a few months after moving from Australia and he says Adams certainly gets the team focused.

Adams starts shot put qualifying on Sunday, while decathlete Brent Newdick is the first New Zealander in action.
