Souths coach on brink before thrilling comeback

7:38 am on 1 August 2011

He may or may not have been joking, but veteran South Sydney coach John Lang says he considered resigning as his side fell behind 20-0 to St George in the NRL clash at WIN Stadium.

However he stayed in the job long enough to be able to declare the Rabbitohs' miracle 34-24 win the best comeback he'd been involved with.

Few would argue after Souths looked like they'd given up on defence and allowed the Dragons to score four tries in the opening 18 minutes.

At 20-0 a cricket score was on the cards, but a Rhys Wesser try late in the first half and five second-half tries - including a hat-trick to Dylan Farrell - made for a stunning upset.

Land says the Rabbitohs performance was probably the best comeback he's ever been associated with considering the circumstances.

Those circumstances included Souths all but blowing their chances of a finals spot with last week's thrashing by the Warriors and one win from their previous 12 appearances in Wollongong.

The Rabbitohs' first win at WIN since 2007 kept their slim finals chances on life support.
