American swimmer Ryan Lochte has again beaten Michael Phelps at the world championships in Shanghai.

Lochte broke his own world record as he pipped the Olympic champion by a fingertip to win a thrilling 200 metre individual medley.

Lochte out-duelled the Olympic champion to win in one minute 54.00 seconds, shaving one tenth of a second off his 2009 world record. It's the first long course world record since the controversial polyurethane suits were banned at the start of last year.

The Australian James Magnussen has emerged as the sport's new sprint king after powering his way to the 100 freestyle gold, and at 20 years of age he becomes the first Australian male to win swimming's glamour event at a world championships.
