Golden point wins for Rabbitohs, Panthers, Tigers end losing run

There were two dramatic golden point victories in the National Rugby League on Saturday night with South Sydney and Penrith resurrecting their NRL seasons while all but burying their rivals' playoff hopes.

South Sydney halfback Chris Sandow snapped a 51-metre field goal in the seventh minute of extra time to seal a 21-20 golden-point victory over NRL local rivals Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium to extinguish the Roosters' flickering finals hopes and breathe life into the Rabbitohs' top-eight ambitions.

Penrith kicker Luke Walsh also delivered the winning field goal after six minutes of golden-point extra time for his Panthers' 23-22 victory over Parramatta - a heartbreaking finish for Eels' skipper Nathan Hindmarsh in his 300th game.

Eels' fullback Luke Burt had earlier shaved the upright with a 40-metre attempt in the first period of extra time.

Elsewhere, Kiwis captain Benji Marshall scored a try and kicked seven goals as his Wests Tigers snapped a three-match losing streak with a comprehensive 38-18 win over North Queensland in Townsville.

The Tigers created more attacking chances than the Cowboys, who struggled in the absence of injured co-captains Johnathan Thurston and Matt Scott to slump to their second home loss of the season.
