The Queensland Reds half-back Will Genia has edged out team-mate Quade Cooper by two votes to win the Australian Super Rugby player of the year award while Reds mentor Ewen McKenzie scooped the coach of the year prize.

As expected, the minor premiership-winning Reds dominated the awards with the Queenslanders also winning team of the year.

Melbourne Rebels half-back Nick Phipps was rookie of the year while Sydney-based Stuart Dickinson was the referee of the year.

The result in the major award reversed last year's player of the year, where Cooper prevailed with Genia coming in second.

Genia joined the likes of John Eales, George Smith, Stephen Larkham, Stirling Mortlock and retiring Waratahs captain Phil Waugh in winning the Australian Super Rugby player of the year.

McKenzie set a record with his win, becoming the first person to win coach of the year four times.
