The New Zealand driver Scott Dixon, who'll start from second on the grid in Monday's main event, has set the fastest time in practice for the Indianapolis 500 IndyCar race.

Pole sitter Alex Tagliani posted the second fastest time in final practice for the 100th running of the famous race.

Dixon, the 2008 Indy champion, had the top lap on a cold, overcast day clocking 225.474 miles per hour (362.865 kilometres per hour) while his Ganassi team mate and last year's winner Briton Dario Franchitti was third fastest.

Team Penske, winner of a record 15 Indy 500s, continued to struggle with three-time winner Helio Castroneves of Brazil the only driver in the three-car powerhouse to crack the top 10 with the ninth-best time while Australians Will Power and Ryan Briscoe were 13th and 15th respectively.
