Guilty verdicts handed to the former sprinters Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou have finally offered Greece the chance to close an unsavoury chapter in the country's sporting history.

The two Sydney 2000 Olympic medallists received 31-month suspended jail sentences for perjury, seven years after the Athens Games where they were accused of staging a motorcycle crash to avoid a drugs test.

Their coach was given Christos Tzekos a 33-month sentence for his involvement in the scandal.

All three are appealing their sentences and will try to translate their jail terms into financial penalties.

Court officials say the appeals will be heard within 10 days.
