Canterbury clinch Plunket Shield

11:14 pm on 7 April 2011

Canterbury has won cricket's Plunket Shield after defeating Northern Districts by eight wickets in Rangiora on a rain-affected final day.

Otago finished second with 30 points, 11 behind Canterbury, after yesterday's early outright win over Wellington in Queenstown.

Central had a chance of winning the four day trophy, but only if Canterbury lost and they won, and the final day of their match with Auckland in Napier was washed out.

Central and Northern were a point behind Otago in third and fourth with Wellington on 27 and Auckland 10.
