Michael Campbell's encouraged by his equal best round in six European events this year - a three under par 69 that included six birdies on the opening day of the Hassan Trophy tournament in Morocco.
Campbell ended the day tied for 12th, five strokes behind Ireland's Peter Lawrie.
The other New Zealander in the field, Mark Brown, will need a hot second round to make the cut after an opening round of 74.
