NZRU in talks over NPC re-draw

11:47 am on 19 March 2011

The New Zealand Rugby Union is close to confirming an opponent and a venue for the All Blacks' Christchurch earthquake fundraising Test before the Tri Nations.

But chief executive Steve Tew says it's too soon to say if it'll be in the South Island.

Meanwhile Tew says Canterbury's request for the national provincial championship to redrawn is being discussed with other unions.

He says the World Cup would've limited Canterbury's access to AMI stadium anyway.

But with repair from last month's earthquake now unlikely to be completed until February, Canterbury's CEO says there are no other grounds in Christchurch suitable to host a national provincial game.

Tew says it's understandable local CEO Hamish Riach's very keen for Canterbury to play there and there are some alternatives but they have some challenges, especially with lights and broadcasting facilities.

There are implications for other unions too and Tew says they'll be discussed over the next week or so.
