Warriors lose and also lose Vatuvei to major knee injury

The Warriors have lost their first NRL rugby league game of the season, Parramatta winning 24-18 at Eden Park in Auckland.

There was possibly a bigger loss for the home side with star Warriors and Kiwis winger Manu Vatuvei limping off the field midway through the first spell with a knee injury that could keep him out for six weeks.

New coach Stephen Kearney's era at Parramatta got off to a perfect start as his side upstaged the pre-game favourites four tries to three, despite going into the match as rank outsiders.

The Warriors scored twice in quick succession with 10 minutes remaining to give them a sniff of victory but the Eels held firm to secure the points and quieten the record 38,412 crowd.

Melbourne beat Manly 18-6 at home to earn their first points in almost a year, and champions St George Illawarra beat Gold Coast 25-16 at Skilled Park.
