The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says the Manchester City footballer Kolo Toure failed a drugs test after taking a diet pill belonging to his wife.
Wenger spoke with the former Gunners captain after news broke of his positive test for a specified substance.
The Premier League manager says Toure wanted to control his weight because that's where he has some problems and says he took the product on his wife's advice.
Toure could face a lengthy ban and is currently suspended from playing for City.
The 29-year-old moved to Eastlands in 2009 for 16.3 million euros ($NZ 35.9 million) having spent seven seasons at Arsenal.
Wenger says Toure's error was failing to check the legality of the product he took.
He says the news was a complete surprise as Toure is an honest player who is a committed family man, adding he doesn't suspect him at all of taking drugs to enhance his performances.
Toure has the right to request his B sample also be tested.
The Ivorian would then get the opportunity to go before a personal hearing.
