Auckland v Canterbury football match postponed

11:39 am on 28 February 2011

The upcoming match between Auckland City and Canterbury United in the domestic football competition, scheduled for this Sunday in Auckland, has been postponed following last week's devastating earthquake in Christchurch.

The decision was made upon consultation between New Zealand Football and Canterbury United staff.

Some Canterbury players have left the region with their young families, others have suffered extensive damage to their homes, and one player is reported to have lost his home altogether.

A decision as to if, and when, the match will be played would be made at a later date.

The match could yet have an impact on the playoff picture with Auckland chasing Waitakere for the Minor Premiership and Canterbury one point behind Hawke's Bay United in the race for the fourth and final semi-final berth.

However, if Waitakere earn at least a point away to Otago United, and Hawke's Bay win their final league match at home to Waikato, the postponed match will have no bearing on the top four placings, and will likely be cancelled.
