Nick Willis to be awarded Olympic medal in Christchurch

Two and a half years after the event, New Zealand 1500m runner Nick Willis is to finally get his Olympic silver medal.

Willis finished third in the race at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and was awarded the bronze medal.

But the winner Rashid Ramzi of Bahrain subsequently tested positive for the a blood boosting drug and disqualified.

Willis returned his bronze medal last year and will finally get his hands on a newly struck Olympic silver medal on Saturday week, at a ceremony in Christchurch during the international track meet at QE II Park.

It's the first time an Olympic medal will have been officially awarded to athlete in New Zealand.
