Doctors treating the Polish Formula One driver Robert Kubica, who was seriously injured in a high-speed rally crash at the weekend, say it'll take a week or so to ascertain how permanent the damage is to his right hand.

The 26-year-old Lotus Renault driver spent seven hours in surgery in Genoa yesterday after his car slammed into a church wall when he was on the way to the start of a minor motor rally.

Kubica suffered multiple fractures of his right arm and leg, and his right hand, which was partially severed by a metal railing. The surgeon who led the operation says Kubica's hand is warm which is a good sign, though it could take a year to recover full movement.

Bruno Senna is likely to take Kubica's place at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix in five weeks.
