Man U beaten for first time this season

8:44 am on 6 February 2011

Leaders Manchester United suffered their first English Premier League football defeat of the season as they went down 2-1 at bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Nani gave United an early lead but George Elokobi and Kevin Doyle replied before halftime to earn Wolves victory.

United had not lost in the league since a home defeat by Chelsea last April and were one match away from beating the club record 29-game unbeaten league sequence set by their 1999 treble-winning team.

The defeat also ended United's hopes of equalling Arsenal's 2003-04 feat of going through an entire Premier League season unbeaten.

United's lead at the top is now four points over Arsenal who let a 4-nil lead slip to draw 4-all at Newcastle United.

Carlos Tevez scored a hat-trick before halftime for third-placed Manchester City as they stayed in title contention with a 3-nil home win against West Bromwich Albion, the Argentine twice converting from the penalty spot on his birthday.

Fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur moved level on points with Chelsea after substitute Niko Kranjcar's last-gasp winner in a 2-1 home victory over Bolton Wanderers while sixth-placed Sunderland lost ground with a 3-2 defeat at Stoke City after twice leading.

Louis saha scored 4 times as Everton beat Blackpool 5-3, Wigan Athletic beat Blackburn Rovers 4-3 to edge out of the bottom three and Aston Villa and Fulham shared four goals in another entertaining tussle at Villa Park.

The 41 goals scored eclipsed the previous Premier League record of 36 on a single Saturday set on November 27 last year.

Tomorrow West Ham play Birmingham and Chelsea play Liverpool.
