Soccer match in South Africa called off because of lack of power

A South African premier league football match set for Soccer City in Soweto has been postponed because cable theft around the stadium has left the venue for last year's World Cup final without any power.

The theft of cables in the vicinity of the stadium caused a power surge which blew the floodlights and cut off all the other power at the stadium.

The match between second placed Kaizer Chiefs and second from bottom Moroka Swallows will now be played in 10 days time.

Chiefs, who are the country's most popular club, recently shifted their home ground to the cavernous venue that hosted last year's final between Spain and the Netherlands.

Copper cable theft is common in crime-ridden South Africa.
