NRL prop faces possible jail time

The Australian league player Ryan Tandy faces a possible five-year jail term for his involvement in a betting plunge in an NRL match last year.

New South Wales police have charged the 29-year-old Canterbury Bulldogs prop with giving false or misleading evidence to a New South Wales Crime Commission hearing.

The charge stems from a massive betting plunge on a North Queensland Cowboys penalty as the first scoring play in their inconsequential game last August against the Bulldogs.

Tandy was penalised in the second minute in front of his own goal posts, but the betting plunge, which would have returned $300,000, backfired when the Cowboys took a tap kick and scored a try, rather than kicking the penalty.
