Ponting ready for first bat in a month

The injured Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting will dust off his bat for the first time in a month this week as he sets out to prove his fitness for the World Cup.

Less than three months out from the start of the tournament, Ponting will possibly have a net session at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday while his team-mates play England in the sixth game of their one day series, which Australia have already wrapped up.

Ponting has recovered from surgery on a broken finger suffered during the Ashes series, and while he's likely to be fit for the World Cup, he probably won't play before Australia's two warmup games in India.
