Torres thought Liverpool wouldn't challenge hard enough

Spanish striker Fernando Torres' move to Chelsea from Liverpool for a British record fee on English football's transfer deadline day appears to be motivated by a desire to win more trophies.

Torres has signed a five and a half year contract with the London champions reportedly paying in the region of $100 million.

Torres told Chelsea TV the move's good for his career and Chelsea are one of the biggest teams in Europe.

Torres' defection to the Blues came after the 26-year-old put in a written transfer request, and the fee eclipses the $72 million the Reds paid earlier in the day for Torres's replacement, Newcastle United's 22-year-old England international Andy Carroll.
