Djokovic beats Federer, Li Na makes final

6:42 am on 28 January 2011

An inspired Novak Djokovic shocked the defending champion Roger Federer in the first semi-final at the Australian tennis open on Thursday night, leaving the Swiss without a grand slam title for the first time in eight years.

The third-seeded Serbian overpowered the four-times champion 7-6 7-5 6-4 in three hours of intense, high quality tennis to reach a second Melbourne final.

Although Federer and Djokovic both cautioned against heralding the end of an era, 28-year-old Li Na became the first Chinese woman to reach a grand slam singles final, coming from a match point down in the second set to topple the world number one Caroline Wozniacki 3-6 7-5 6-3 and set up a clash with Kim Clijsters, who overpowered Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-3 6-3.

Tonight's second men's semi-final is between Spain's David Ferrer and the Scot Andy Murray.
