New Zealand road cycling champion Hayden Roulston has helped his Australian team-mate Matthew Goss win the first stage of the Tour Down Under.

Roulston led Goss out on the 138-kilometre opening stage from Mawson Lakes to Angaston and he beat German Andre Greipel to the line by four seconds ahead of another Australian, Robbie McEwen.

New Zealand's Greg Henderson was 10th at the finish.

Retirement-bound Lance Armstrong was satisfied to finish with the peloton in the first stage.
