Sainz extends Dakar lead

8:27 pm on 8 January 2011

Defending champion Carlos Sainz has edged team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah by nine seconds to take the Dakar Rally's sixth stage, but three-time winner Stephane Peterhansel slipped back after his BMW suffered a puncture.

Spanish driver Sainz finished the 456km stage from Iquique in 4hr 53min 53sec, just ahead of fellow Volkswagen driver Al-Attiyah of Qatar, last year's runner-up.

But Peterhansel, who had taken second place in the overall standings after the fifth stage, was 12 minutes 25 seconds behind Sainz.

Ruben Faria of Portugal, riding a KTM, took the motorcycle honours.

Spanish KTM rider Marc Coma still leads the overall category standings after coming in fourth.
