The nine times New Zealand Ironman champion Cameron Brown has comfortably won the Whangamata round of the Contact Tri Series, 20 years after winning his first triathlon in senior company in the same event.

The 38-year-old held off much younger opponents but the women's race proved the opposite with the promising young Tirau triathlete Rebecca Kingsford upsetting Ironman legend Jo Lawn, who finished second.

Brown finished in one hour 53 minutes 23 seconds, two minutes 23 seconds ahead of another promising junior, Edward Rawles from Inglewood with another Aucklander, Brad Aldrich, third.

Kingsford won in two hours six minutes 14 seconds, more than two minutes ahead of Lawn, who was about four minutes clear of Waikato's Maddy Brunton.
