Double century maker Brendon McCullum says Sunday's great start to the three-day warmup match against Pakistan will help continue to grow New Zealand's opening partnership.
McCullum, who scored 206, and Tim McIntosh, who made 51, put on 162 runs for the first wicket for the New Zealand XI, which is actually a 12 after both sides agreed to an extra man.
McCullum says the hit out was important ahead of the first test starting later this week in Hamilton.
The hosts resumed on 342 for four on the second morning in Whangarei but familiar batting woes returned with yet another collapse, bowled out 42 runs later for 384.
James Franklin and Dean Brownlie departed without adding to their overnight tallies while Reece Young, Brent Arnel and Trent Boult added nothing at all.
Captain Daniel Vettori made 18 while Tim Southee was left 21 not out.
In reply Pakistan have experienced some early wobbles, losing both openers and dangerman Younis Khan cheaply.
Chris Martin claimed all three wickets, Mohammad Hafeez caught for four and Taufeeq Umar for one.
Khan was also caught out for seven. Pakistan reached 24 for three at lunch.
