Late Rooney penalty sends Man United through

Manchester United and Champions League debutants Tottenham Hotspur have qualified for the knockout round in European football's premier competition.

Spurs convincingly beat Werder Bremen 3-0 in their Group A clash after leading 2-0 at half-time in London.

In Glasgow, Wayne Rooney converted a late penalty to send Manchester United through from Group C with a 1-0 win over Rangers.

A draw would have been enough for United but Rooney's clinical spot-kick three minutes from time secured victory in a tight match at the Ibrox.

Rangers were eliminated by Valencia's 6-1 win over Bursaspor and will now play in the Europa League.

Inter Milan join Chelsea after a 1-0 win over the Dutch side FC Twente at the San Siro.
