Former France football great Zinedine Zidane has been appointed as a special adviser to Real Madrid's first team.

Zidane will liaise with the president and coach at his old team and will participate in Champions League events and functions, travelling with the team on a regular basis.

Real head coach Jose Mourinho made an appeal last month for the former Real midfielder to work more closely with the team, rather than operating as an adviser to club president Florentino Perez.

Zidane, a triple world player of the year, retired after being sent off in the 2006 World Cup final.
