The England footballer Nobby Stiles' 1966 World Cup winner's medal was bought at auction by his former club Manchester United for 188,200 pounds ($NZ 399,260).

United also paid 49,400 pounds ($NZ 104,800) for their former midfielder's 1968 European Cup winner's medal and both medals will go on display at the club's Old Trafford museum.

Stiles' 1966 World Cup cap was sold for 35,287 pounds ($NZ 74,870) at the auction in Edinburgh.

The 68-year-old Stiles, who suffered a mild stroke in June, had said that he planned to auction the medals and many other pieces of football memorabilia and give the proceeds to his three sons because he was unable to fairly distribute the items among them.

The previous record for an England winner's medal from the 1966 Wembley final against West Germany was the 165,000 pounds ($NZ 350,120) paid for Alan Ball's in 2005.
