London's preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games have been given a glowing endorsement but also a warning that important challenges lie ahead.

The International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, speaking after a meeting of the IOC's executive board, in Mexico said London's preparations were going extremely well but the next 12 months would provide the real test.

He says the upcoming test events will be a good indicator as to whether systems are good enough.

Rogge says the executive board's also satisfied with the preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio.

Up to 11 new events, including women's ski jumping, could be added to the programme for Sochi after the IOC agreed to review them next year.

The board said it was looking favourably at their inclusion and took the unusual step of empowering Rogge to make the decision by himself.
