The former Kiwis rugby league coach Brian McClennan has quit as coach of Super League side Leeds Rhinos with a year left on his contract to return home to New Zealand and pursue his dream of coaching in the NRL.

McClennan guided Leeds to consecutive Super League titles in 2008 and 2009 and had signed a new one-year contract in May but after a trophy-less season at Headingley the 48-year-old decided to hand over the reins to Brian McDermott.

McClennan says now was the best time to step down as Leeds build for the future and hinted at his desire to test himself in the NRL.
