Rooney at Old Trafford to 2015 after saying he wanted out

Wayne Rooney will stay at Manchester United until 2015, after the England striker performed a stunning U-turn by signing a new five-year contract.

Rooney had looked destined to leave Old Trafford in the next transfer window after saying midweek that he wanted to quit because of United's lack of clout in attracting more top players to the club.

He attributes his change of heart to manager Sir Alex Ferguson, whom Rooney's calling a "genius" and says convinced him that he belongs at United, and that the club's totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history.

Ferguson, who had been visibly shaken this week when describing how his striker had wanted to quit, says Rooney has apologised to him and the players.

But Rooney, who earlier this month publicly contradicted Ferguson by saying he was not injured when his manager said he was, still faces the tricky job of winning over fans who feel betrayed.

Rooney has been ruled out for three weeks with an ankle injury.
