Repairs to the main Delhi Commonwealth Games stadium continued right up until just a couple of hours before the track and field programme.
Staff worked through Tuesday night to make sure the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was ready for the start of the programme on Thursday morning.
Grass inside the track needed to be replaced after Monday's opening ceremony while potholes on the track needed to be fixed too.
Organisers maintain they expected the work to take this long.
