The New Zealand IndyCar driver Scott Dixon has won the final Indy300 at the Homestead-Miami speedway in Florida, while his team-mate Dario Franchetti came away with the Championship title.

The Scotsman trailed the Australian driver Will Power by 12 points heading into the final IndyCar round.

But Power was forced to retire early from the race after breaking his right rear suspension, allowing defending champion Franchetti to claim the crown with an eighth-place finish.

Dixon's win means he finishes the year third overall.

The Championship loss is a big blow to Power, who led the standings for much of the year and held a 59-point lead with four rounds remaining.

Power says he's disappointed to miss out on the title, but says Franchetti was just too strong in the final races.
