The New Zealand cyclist Greg Henderson has pulled out of the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team, amid safety and security concerns in Delhi.

Henderson, who was part of the road team for Delhi, won a gold medal in the points race on the track at the Manchester Games eight years ago.

The chief executive of BikeNZ, Kieran Turner, says they're disappointed but supportive of Henderson's decision.

Turner says athletes' safety and security is their top priority and they won't be putting athletes at risk.

He says he's confident the New Zealand Olympic committee will make the right decision about New Zealand's involvement in Delhi.

On Thursday team chef de mission Dave Currie announced the arrival of New Zealand athletes in Delhi would be delayed until Tuesday, as the athletes' village is still not ready to move into.
