The San Diego Chargers wiped out memories of their NFL american football season-opening defeat six days ago as Philip Rivers led the defending AFC West champions to a crushing 38-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Rivers completed 22 of 29 pass attempts for 334 yards and three touchdowns while the Chargers delivered a rock-solid defensive display to give their home fans plenty to celebrate on a sunny afternoon at Qualcomm Stadium.

Eyeing a fourth consecutive division title, San Diego outclassed their opponents in every department and Jacksonville's six turnovers matched their highest game total ever.

Fullback Mike Tolbert and tight end Antonio Gates recorded two touchdowns apiece for the Chargers and their inspirational defence limited the Jaguars to 71 rushing yards.
