The Wellington swimmer Gareth Kean says his coach has had a huge impact on his career which has taken a dramatic leap in recent months and has set him up for a Commonwealth Games medal.

The 18-year-old backstroker has impressed at the Pan Pacific senior and junior championships in recent months and is now ranked third equal in his specialist event the 200 metres.

Kean says he has already exceeded his expectations this year and so next month's Commonwealth Games could well turn into a bonus.

He says he doesn't have any expectations in Delhi and is looking forward to the competition.

Kean is coached by the former Commonwealth Games 200 backstroke champion and world silver medalist, Gary Hurring, and he says he's been a big help over the last 12 months.

Gareth Kean and most of the swim team will head to Abu Dhabi to train before the games in Delhi.
