The New Zealand motocross rider Ben Townley has finished 4th overall in the American AMA Championship following the 12th and final round.

After a two year layoff due to injury, Townley started the year by perforating his bowel while practicing in New Zealand but still managed to start the series, missing valuable testing and physical preparation time.

The 28-year-old says looking back on the championship he can't be too disappointed with 4th overall after such a long layoff but there was also some opportunities he missed this year.

Townley will now represent Team NZ at the Motocross of Nations to be held in Denver, Colorado at the end of the month.
