New Delhi police have assumed control of all venues in an unprecedented lockdown ahead of a Commonwealth Games beset by problems including monsoonal rains.

Some 80-thousand Delhi police have assumed management of security at Games venues, and about 175,000 paramilitary have been deployed to guard the city from terrorist strikes.

The source said an air space shutdown would be enforced for five hours either side of the Games ceremonies.

New Delhi is braced for rising flood levels of the Yamuna River which bisects the city and surged four metres in height on Sunday.
