Turkey to meet Serbia in one semi-final at basketball champs

8:43 am on 9 September 2010

Hosts Turkey have secured a semi-final meeting with Serbia after a 95-68 romp over Slovenia in the quarter-finals of the world men's basketball championships.

Turkey were deserved of their 27-14 lead at the end of the first quarter as Slovenia struggled to penetrate the Turkish zone defence, shooting at just 29 per cent from the field compared to Turkey's 75.

Although Slovenia would experience a marked improvement in their shooting in the second quarter, the Turkish onslaught at the other end did not let up, the hosts leading 50-31 at half-time.

Milwaukee Bucks' Ersan Ilyasova knew how to please the sell-out home crowd of 10,000, throwing down two massive slams on the way to his 14 half-time points. He was also the only player to break double figures in the half.

Turkey maintained the pressure to lead 71-43 at the start of the final quarter, during which the game lost its way as Turkish minds began to wander to their semi-final against Serbia this weekend.

Ilyasova finished the game as top-scorer with 19 points while Sinan Guler was next best with 12 points, then Oman Onan Kerem Tunceri and Toronto Raptors' Hidayet Turkoglu all finished with 10 points.

Serbia won a thriller against the defending champions Spain 92-89.
