Stosur wins US Open thriller

7:01 pm on 6 September 2010

The fifth seed Samantha Stosur has advanced to the US tennis Open quarter-finals with a tense three-set victory over Russia's Elena Dementieva.

Stosur's the first Australian woman since Wendy Turbull in 1986 to make the last eight in New York.

She survived four match points to eclipse the Russian 12th seed 6-3 2-6 7-6 (7-2) and set up a last-eight showdown on Wednesday with the defending champion Kim Clijsters.

The match didn't start until just before 11 o'clock at night and finished at 1.37am, making it latest finishing women's singles match in US Open history.

The tennis legend Martina Navratilova says it's unfair Stosur and Dementieva had to follow a best-of-five-set men's match, in which Russia's Mikhail Youzhny ousted the American John Isner.
