The New Zealand men's basketball team has beaten Canada 71-61 to move into the second round at the World Championships in Turkey.

It follows yesterday's victory over Lebanon.

New Zealand's star shooter Kirk Penney was held scoreless in the first quarter, but Phill Jones kept the scoreboard clicking over until Penney found his range.

The Tall Blacks led 11-8 at quarter time, 35-28 at half time and 47-41 at three-quarter time.

Penney finished with 18 points, Casey Frank 14 and Phill Jones 11.

New Zealand's last group match is against leaders France.
