Woods fires six under par to snatch early lead at The Barclays

Tiger Woods has fired his best round since his sex scandal erupted, a six-under par 65, to seize the early lead at The Barclays in the first competitive round since his divorce.

The World number one Woods, who has struggled through the longest win drought of any year in his career, fired seven birdies and just a single bogey at the Ridgewood Country Club to seize the clubhouse lead.

In the first US PGA playoff event, defending champion Woods needs to finish at least 57th to ensure he continues to advance to next week's event at Boston.

If he qualifies for the Boston tournament it should all-but seal his selection for the US Ryder Cup team that will defend the trophy against Europe in October in Wales.
