It looks as if New Zealand's opportunity to host a round of the FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup next year may be another casualty of the recession.
Swimming New Zealand's chief executive Mike Byrne says they've haven't been able to secure a naming sponsor and costs have also risen considerably with the drop in the New Zealand dollar.
Byrne says they've been looking for about five months and approached up to 30 companies with a proposal which offered television naming right s to 30 million homesin the unuited States abd Auystralia.
He says Swimming New Zealand needs to find about $80,000 by tomorrow night otherwise FINA will have to be told the March 28 event can't be held Wellington 's Oriental Bay.
The professional open water circuit's profile has been boosted by the inclusion of the 10 kilometre swim into the Olympic programme at Beijing.
