The Socceroos have broken into the world's top 30 teams for the first time.

In the latest FIFA rankings Australia climbed nine places to 28th in the world, and they're now the top-ranked team in the Asian Confederation.

They lost only two of their 15 internationals this year, and their best results were two big wins over Qatar and a shock 2-1 friendly win over the Netherlands in September.

The European champions Spain ended the year as the world's No.1 ranked nation after winning all 16 of their matches.

The All Whites who've played relatively few matches this year suffered the biggest drop, falling 26 places to No.86.
