England's momentous defence on more than one occasion was barely enough to contain the exuberant and determined Canadian attack.

The Red Roses came in as heavy tournament favourites but held only a slim margin of 15-12 at half-time in the exhausting final as Canada pushed numerous times for the lead in the second half.

One of England's key moments came early in the second half as they scored from behind their own try line following a prolonged period of defence.

Roses winger Claudia McDonald's initial counter attack opened a stunning attacking opportunity before she offloaded to speedster Abby Dow who put the foot to the floor ahead of the chasing Canadian defence.

Seconds before the big England breakaway, Canada were within inches of scoring and taking the lead in the tight contest.

The Canadian women kept attacking as Tyson Beukeboom crossed in the 67th minute to reduce the deficit to four points.

A penalty a short time later to Emily Scarratt extended the lead 26-19 heading into the final ten minutes.

The start was much closer than many had predicted before the game as the Red Roses took a few minutes to settle into their high-tempo game after a promising kick-off and early phases from the dominant Canadians.

England opened their account with a try to Marlie Packer following Zoe Harrison's kick to the corner and a forceful driving maul.

The strength of England's backs saw Helena Rowland make a fantastic break before she offloaded to Abby Dow for the try.

Canada responded with some individual brilliance and a kick through and chase from Justine Pelletier.

Pelletier was one of the stand-outs for the Canadian side.
