Tauranga's Jared Pender was the New Zealand star of the second day with a five under par 67.
Pender, who started with a bogey, never put a foot wrong after that with six birdies.
World number one ranked amateur Danny Lee managed a one-under par 71 while James Gill had the non-counting one-over 73 at Grange Golf Course.
