Gordon McCauley is the best placed New Zealander in 7th place after the first stage proper of the Hearld Sun cycle tour in Victoria.
The field finished in a bunch after the 130km ride in very tough windy conditions which saw a number of riders pull out, including New Zealand's Greg Henderson.
Australian Mathew Goss leads the Tour.
The New Zealand team is in 13th place.
