Massive Victory as Archie fires

The Melbourne Victory continued their high-scoring ways in their first home game on Friday night, backing up last weekend's 4-2 defeat of the Wellington Phoenix with a 5-0 rout of the defending Australian champions Newcastle.

The A-League sparked into life in its third round as Melbourne's star Archie Thompson lit the fuse for a scoring explosion from the bench.

Thompson, in his first game for the season after a foot injury sustained during the Olyroos' Beijing campaign, was instrumental in Melbourne's first three goals, including scoring one himself.

The Phoenix face Adelaide United in Adelaide tonight and Wellington coach Ricki Herbert says the team have addressed their leaky defence.
